Big Things in Casey, IL

I made a map about the town of Casey, Illinois and its plethora of giant objects. Because there are so many in such a small area, I decided to make my map and icons in an isometric style and present the main street of the town with some of its most iconic attractions.
I borrowed my colors for the first three color iterations from abstract art. I used Illustrator's generative recolor for the fourth iteration, and corrected the colors to improve contrast.
I first sketched the objects on an isometric grid in Procreate, then imported the sketches to Illustrator. I adjusted the icons within Illustrator for consistency and simplification.
I worked from the official map of Casey's jumbo attractions. I first made a simplified version of the map that cropped in on the area I wanted to highlight. Then I decided on the isometric perspective, so I redrew the roads isometrically while excluding the ones that weren't necessary or hurt the composition. I placed the icons and my house sub-icons in their approximate locations.

After determining the basic layout, I added smoke trails to the i's in the title to make them chimneys. I added trees and more houses to decorate the map. upon receiving feedback in class, I decreased the size of the houses and trees and changed the road lines to be isometric with lower contrast in order to let the giant objects be the main attraction.
Update 1: Scaled the houses and trees smaller to make the icons more visible.
Update 2: Added process.
